Our story

You shouldn't need a medical degree to understand your own report.

My friends have been sending me their medical reports - their own, their family members' - since I was a medical student. The same question, over and over: what does this actually mean?

Every patient I've ever met has felt the same thing. You walk out of an appointment, look at the report, and realize you understood about a third of what was said. The rest is in a language you didn't sign up to learn.

Years ago I shelved the idea of building a database to answer those questions - it would have been impossibly expensive. Then came AI. And what was impossible became a weekend project, then a real tool, then three of them. Medsplain TX to translate the report. Helix to organize the record. Medsplain on YouTube to break down medical topics you see online in plain English.

This is the start of a different relationship with medicine - where you have the same tools clinicians do to make sense of what's happening in your body. Where understanding your own report is the floor, not a luxury.
